It’s Monday, the start of a new workweek. Another week down and infinity left. Sometimes that infinity can be a real downer when you are drained and feeling less than inspired. So when you are having one of those not so chipper days, how do you turn it around? What makes you happy?
Conventional wisdom says that happiness lies with one self and no one can make you happy and genuine happiness is a state of contentment, a peace of mind, and sense of well being regardless of outward circumstances going on in your life. Sounds good doesn’t it? How many of you believe it to be true, that no matter what is going on in your life you can be happy?
A common denominator with all people is we all desperately seek to be happy. When was the last time you heard of someone purposely trying to seek unhappiness? Even in the Declaration of Independence, second paragraph, it declares that the pursuit of happiness is one of our inalienable rights. And by golly some people take that right to extremely literally and will roll over anyone who gets in their way of achieving what they deem the ultimate happiness. However, happiness and contentment isn't getting what we want, but being satisfied with what we have. This doesn’t mean we have to accept status quo, just know your limitations. Some people in their pursuit of happiness are spending themselves into financial ruin in an attempt to capture it. But it seems the harder they try, the more futile their quest.
I wonder at times if people really realize when they have achieved ultimate happiness, if they even recognize or if there are people that no matter how much they have in possession, wealth, and health can never truly be happy. One reason so many people are unhappy with their status quo is that they really haven’t taken the time to figure out just what really makes them happy. A successful person isn’t necessarily happy, so using that as a measurement of happiness can be a bad standard to set.
Be true to thy own self…and if you are unhappy, look inside and you will find the answer…Happiness has nothing to do with possessions, environment, or health, it has to do with contentment.

ReplyDeleteWeekends, holidays and vacations! I'm very near to retirement and I can't seem to keep my mind focused on work.
ReplyDeleteWell, it sure ain't a big yellow smiley face with feet standing on the beach! I totally agree that happiness is based on contentment. Some of the richest people in the world aren't happy.
ReplyDeleteI do try to be satisfied with what I have. I'm certainly not poor or doing without the necessities. I could tell myself I want more, but I know in my heart I don't really need it.
ReplyDeleteGiggling babies always put me in a good mood. They are so new and untouched by life as yet.
ReplyDeleteGoing to work used to make me happy but I've reached the point of burnout. I think I need a new career, I just don't know which direction to go.
