How to Inspire Before You Retire

All of us dream of leaving our mark on the world and being remembered when we die. I once read a quote that said to have influenced even one life for the better was true success. I have to agree. True leaders aren't just people who get things done. Anybody can do that. The mark of true leadership is the ability to inspire all of the people around you to stretch their wings and go farther than they thought they could. Inspiration, not perspiration, is the key to immortality.

The question is, how do you inspire the people around you? There are three guidelines that I've found to be particularly effective when it comes to inspiring those around you. First and foremost, be an example. Not just at work, but in your personal life as well. You'd be amazed at how many of the people around you will say, "Well, if so-and-so can do it, then I can too." Secondly, get involved. Take part in office activities, aand get to know the people around you. Finally, hand out praise and punishment sparingly so that each is more effective when you do pass it on. If you can master those three things you'll be an inspiration to everyone around you.

And that truly is the sign of success.

  1. I guess I missed this by a few years as I'm already retired. I like to think that I can still inspire people even though I don't go to an office every day.

  2. I'm going to retire in about a year. I think I have inspired one or two people since I've been here. Hopefully I'll leave my mark when I go. I enjoy helping others and I've always been good at that. I hope it continues after retirement too. I'm planning on volunteering at the hospital several days a week. I already do Saturday mornings.
